How long is the wait for a new appointment? Do you see emergencies? Do you take walk-in patients?

If you have an emergency, we can always see you the same day you call. For non-emergencies, the wait is minimal and often there is no wait at all. However, we do not take walk-in patients - please make sure to call the office to schedule your appointment prior to coming to the office. If you need emergency replacement glasses, we can usually provide them within a half hour.

What is the difference between refraction, Optomap and dilating drops?

Refraction is the process by which we determine what your glasses prescription is and whether or not your prescription has changed. While you read the eye chart, we change the lenses in front of your eyes to see which prescription allows you to see most clearly.

Dilating drops make the pupil of the eye large, allowing us to see the back of your eye during your examination. The dilating drops typically cause blurring of vision for several hours following your examination. The degree and duration of the blurriness varies from person to person.

The Optomap exam also allows us to examine the back of your eye. Using a special camera, we take a picture of the back of your eye, which we then can review on a computer monitor. Dilating drops are not required to take a picture with the Optomap.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist is qualified to diagnose and treat diseases of the eye using medicines, and to fit and prescribe contact lenses and glasses. An ophthalmologist is qualified to perform surgical procedures on and around the eye, in addition to these other functions.
