frequently asked questionsWhat are your office hours? ![]()
![]() Monday 9am - 8pm How long is the wait for a new appointment? Do you see emergencies? Do you take walk-in patients? If you have an emergency, we can always see you the same day you call. For non-emergencies, the wait is minimal and often there is no wait at all. However, we do not take walk-in patients - please make sure to call the office to schedule your appointment prior to coming to the office. If you need emergency replacement glasses, we can usually provide them within a half hour. We provide state-of-the-art eye care in the areas of medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases, refractive "vision-correction" surgery, contact lenses and glasses. See Services and Procedures for more information Can I order contact lenses without being examined? No. We need to examine you first to make sure that you do not have any vision-threatening problems, which may be in an early stage and not be causing symptoms yet. What insurance plans do you accept? What vision plans do you accept? Please see Insurance Plans and Information for a list. Does my insurance require a referral? This depends on your particular insurance plan. Please check with your insurance carrier to determine whether or not a referral is required prior to your appointment. Does Medicare cover the cost of my glasses? Typically, following cataract surgery, Medicare will cover 80% of the cost your glasses. Do I have to get my glasses at Precision Eye Wear? No. If you prefer, we will give you a copy of your glasses prescription, which can then be filled elsewhere. What should I bring to the appointment? Insurance cards. Should I wear my contact lenses or my glasses to the appointment? Can I wear makeup? Unless we instruct you otherwise, you should wear your glasses and take your contact lenses out. It is okay to wear makeup but it may smear a little if we put eye drops in your eyes. I’m a new patient. How long will I be in the office? This depends upon what needs to be done during your visit. If a complete examination is necessary and you are a new patient, you should plan to spend about two hours in the office from start to finish. Of course, the amount of time you spend may be less than this. How can I decrease the time I spend in the waiting room? Fill out the forms at home prior to arrival. If your insurance requires it, make sure that you have a referral from your primary care provider. Remember to bring your insurance cards to the office. Do you do surgery in your office? With which hospitals are you affiliated? We perform certain laser surgeries and eyelid procedures in the office. We do other operations, like cataract surgery, in an ambulatory surgery center or in a hospital. We are chiefly affiliated with Island Eye Surgicenter in Carle Place and North Shore University Hospital at Syosset. What is the cost of refractive surgery? It depends upon what procedure is being done. Following a consultation with the doctor, our surgical coordinator can provide you with the details. What is the difference between refraction, Optomap and dilating drops? Refraction is the process by which we determine what your glasses prescription is and whether or not your prescription has changed. While you read the eye chart, we change the lenses in front of your eyes to see which prescription allows you to see most clearly. Dilating drops make the pupil of the eye large, allowing us to see the back of your eye during your examination. The dilating drops typically cause blurring of vision for several hours following your examination. The degree and duration of the blurriness varies from person to person. The Optomap exam also allows us to examine the back of your eye. Using a special camera, we take a picture of the back of your eye, which we then can review on a computer monitor. Dilating drops are not required to take a picture with the Optomap. What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist? An optometrist is qualified to diagnose and treat diseases of the eye using medicines, and to fit and prescribe contact lenses and glasses. An ophthalmologist is qualified to perform surgical procedures on and around the eye, in addition to these other functions.
