Post Surgery Care
Most patients leave the surgical facility without a patch, wearing a pair of post-cataract sunglasses. About 50% have some mild foreign body sensation, while the other 50% have no discomfort. The pupil remains dilated for about 24 hours after the surgery, so seeing rings around lights is a very common observation. As the pupil goes back to normal size, this phenomenon goes away. Each patient is given very careful instructions by the nursing staff and again by the physician the following day regarding using drops after surgery. These drops are important in preventing infection and aiding in the correct healing of the eye. These instructions are clearly printed out and a chart is provided to help you keep track of the regimen.. Almost all patients may resume normal activities the day following surgery. The major restrictions are no swimming and no eye makeup until the one week post-operative visit has been completed. The vast majority of patients will be delighted with their result even prior to the one week visit!
