IOL
Cataracts are formed when the natural lens in the eye becomes cloudy. When this interferes with the quality of life, the only choice is removal of the cataract. Once the natural lens of the eye is removed, an artificial lens or intraocular lens (IOL) is used to replace the natural lens and provide clear vision, usually with less dependence on eyeglasses. There are many choices of IOL and your physician should ultimately make the decision based on his knowledge and understanding the patient’s needs. IOLs are generally made of silicon or acrylic and usually are able to be folded so they can be placed in position in the least invasive way. Some provide excellent distance vision, but limited near vision. Some provide both distance and near vision simultaneously giving a broad spectrum of vision without the need for glasses. No IOL is perfect, but all are a tremendous improvement over vision with a cataract. After a careful examination, your physician can help you decide which type of IOL is right for you.
